Abstract : [Abstract] The two major oral diseases, dental caries and periodontitis, are caused by oral bacteria. It is important to inhibit the growth of plaque-forming bacteria on the tooth surface or in the gingival sulcus to prevent them. Recently, neutral electrolyzed water (NEW) has been widely used for sterilization of instruments because of its superior bactericidal activity with the least biological and environmental side effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bactericidal effects of NEW against oral microorganisms. The NEW was produced by electrolysis of 0.01%, 0.05% and 0.1% sodium chloride solution, and measured the free chlorine and pH. We evaluated the bactericidal effects of NEW against Streptococcus mutans Ingbritt and Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277. S. mutans or P. gingivalis were washed and suspended in phosphate-buffered saline to an optical density of 0.6 at 550 nm, which equated to approximately 1.0 * 10 9 CFU/ml. The bacterial suspension was centrifuged at 10,000 rpm for 3 minutes, and then exposed to NEW at room temperature for 1 minute. The suspension was then plated on brain heart infusion agar plates after which colony numbers were counted. In addition, the suspension was observed with the scanning electron microscope. The free chlorine concentration of NEW was 2.46 ~ 9.33 ppm. However, the free chlorine was decreased in a time-dependent manner. NEW treatment significantly decreased the viable counts of S. mutans and P. gingivalis. (P<0.01). It was observed that NEW treatment damaged the bacterial cell membrane distinguished by Scanning electron microscopy. These results suggest that the NEW has an antibacterial activity on S. mutans and P. gingivalis, and it may be useful in the prevention for dental caries and periodontal disease.
