Abstract : Morphological studies on valve cusps in venous plexus located in tela submucosa were conducted replica method, trimming method to observe the luminal surface of blood vessels, and the ultrathin section method. Mongrel adult dogs were used for specimens. Venous valves were predominant, especially from the rear of the molar teeth region to in the soft palate. The majority were bicusps, with some tricusps also appearing. The endothelium in these valves appeared somewhat slender when compared with that appearing in venous walls, having their long axis in accordance with the direction of blood flow. When comparing the intracellular component, there were some notable differences between the base and the tip of the cusps. Specifically cytoplasmic filaments(60-90A in diameter)increased in number near the tip of the cusps. Along the free edge of the cusps endothelial cells appeared with morphological characteristics which clearly differentiated them from endothelial cells found at the vessel wall. They not only contained abundant cytoplasmic filaments, but also exhibited many and varied pseudopod-like projections. Where intercellular space becomes narrow, the junctions were tight. However, open junctions with uniform intervals(150-200A) from the luminal side to the connective tissue side, were sometimes seen. Basal lamina was more common in valves than in the walls. Connective tissue in the valves consistcd of bundle-like gatherings of collagen fibrils distributed at comparative intervals near the valve tips, fine filaments, and fibroblasts.
