Abstract : Though various methods have hitherto been used to quantitate the gingival fluid, none of them have yet been existed satisfactory with regard to the handling in clinical application. In this study the gingival fluid quantitating apparatus "Periotron", a newly-developed device to assess the change in the amount of fluid in terms of the change in electric capacity, was taken up, and to investigate whether it could be used for this purpose or not, the changes in the measured values for varying amounts or concentrations of used materials and the change of measuring conditions were examined by using deionized water, human serum, and sodium chloride solution. The obtaind results were as follows : 1. In case when the same material was applied, the digital readings became higher in proportion to the increase of fluid amount, and the steepest curve was shown by deionized water, followed by human serum and sodium chloride solution. On the other hand, remarkable difference was observed in the readings when the materials were applied in which the physical and chemical characteristics were different. 2. No difference was observed in the diffused areas on filter papers of deionized water and sodium chloride solution, while the whole serum showed about 60% of them. 3. No difference was observed in the diffusing qualities according to the different storage conditions of filter paper. 4. The readings became significantly higher when the concentration of sodium chloride solution was less than 0.225%, and they became lower as the concentration was raised. Though this apparatus has an advantage to quantitate even a very small amount of materials quickly and easily, a thorough investigation may be required before it is applied for clinical purposes in view of the above-stated results.
