Abstract : | The primordia of the nasopalatine duot first appear in 47-day embryo of 28 to 30 mm CR. They develop, where the posterior nares used to be located, as a pair of epithelial strings which were part of the epithelial wall between the primary and the secondary palates when the palatal closure started. Anterior part of the primordia develops further forward up to the 12th week. In the 13th week of gestation they are generally canalized, although rarely the canalization starts as early as on the 52nd day. Canalization takes place bilaterally in a small number of cases, while unilateral canalization is mueh more common. However, in some cases the primordial ducts or duct begins to disintegrate without canalization occurring. The regression after canalization takes place more frequently on the oral side than on the nasal side. Some remnants of the nasopalatine duct develop cystic. Most of them disappear sooner or later. However, some persist after birth. Some cystic structures in which ducts of the mucous glands are opened, occurr relatively rare. Bilateral persistence of the duct is very rare except for the fetuses with some malfonmations. In all of the cleft lip fetuses combined with cleft palate persistence of the disintegrated nasopalatine ducts was found. This fact strongly suggests in these cases the cleft formation took place after palatal closure and it had nothing to do with failuie of the palatal fusion. |
