Abstract : [Abstracts] The ideal reconstruction of critical defects of the jawbone due to various diseases is to sustain the regeneration of physiological bone that permits the use of dentures or dental implants. Recent developments in tissue engineering have brought this goal closer to reality. In bone tissue engineering, the scaffold has the key function of proliferating three-dimensionally cells with good osteogenesis. As a rule, not only must a three-dimensional support be provided, but also bone formation must also be supported and enhanced. So far, various kinds of scaffolds have been investigated, but it is still unclear how scaffolding structure, chemistry, and mechanics influence bone formation. We investigated a novel biodegradable PGA-collagen sponge for the three-dimensional culturing of bone marrow stromal cells. In this review, we highlight scaffolds that are currently being developed for three-dimensional cultures of bone marrow stromal cells.
