Abstract : Destruction of the periodontium, the absorption of alveolar bone due to periodontal disease, and loss of jawbone due to tumors or fractures are the most important treatment objectives in dentistry beyond treating dental caries. So far, reconstruction using biomaterials and bone transplantation have became the standard methods of repairing these hard tissues. Recent developments in regenerative medicine using tissue engineering are expected to bring fresh developments to traditional dentistry. Tissue engineering applies the principles of biology and engineering to the development of functional substitutes for damaged tissue. In particular, the need for regeneration of periodontium and jawbone, which forms the foundation of oral rehabihtation, is very high.
