Abstract : [Abstract] For 12 children who had a thumb-sucking habit (primarily while sleeping) until about 4 years of age and who presented an anterior open bite of the deciduous dentition, we attempted to treat the open bite by suppressing the thumb-sucking habit with mittens. Children who recovered spontaneously from the open bite after one month of mitten therapy were the subjects to this study. With some patients, the thumb-sucking habit appeared to have been caused by their living environment. In cases where the overbite was less than -3.0 mm and no abnormal swallowing habit was seen, the open bite was cured spontaneously by suppressing the thumb-sucking habit for a short period. In these cases, the recovery from the open bite was accompanied by a slight decrease in the overjet, an increase in the width of the maxillary deciduous dentition and a decrease in the length of the same dentition. The mandibular arch did not show any remarkable change. Thus, a persistent thumb-sucking habit, which is mainly seen during sleep, was effectively cured by the mitten therapy, without causing any substitute symptoms.
