Abstract : [Abstract] Several investigators have reported the prevalence of non-fluoride enamel mottling as ranging from about 15 to 63% in children. Examination of 1,678 children, 6 to 11 years old, in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan, in which the fluoride content of drinking water was less than 0.24 ppm, revealed that 56.1% had some enamel mottling (questionable or more) and 25.6% had clinically obvious mottling (very mild or more) in their permanent teeth. However, according to the criterion in grading the individuals affected with dental fluorosis proposed by Dean-WHO, children graded as "very mild or more" were 11.2% ; furthermore, only 4.5% was graded as the same through the authors' criterion.
